Before you begin:
PunkBuster is not an EA-made program. It is developed by Even Balance and used in many online games.
This guide will have all available information regarding troubleshooting PunkBuster issues for EA games. For more help, reach out to PunkBuster Support [evenbalance.com]
You must appeal any PunkBuster Ban with Even Balance by opening a ticket [evenbalance.com] by finding and clicking your game on the Support page and then clicking 'Web Ticket System.' EA Advisors cannot overturn PunkBuster Bans
What games use PunkBuster?
Quite a few games run the PunkBuster services, you can find a full list on their homepage [evenbalance.com]. Here are just a few EA titles:

Can I play without it?
You are not required to use PunkBuster. However, you will not be able to join any server that runs PunkBuster Services. There are servers that do not use PunkBuster services, but lack of anti-cheat software can definitely degrade your gaming experience.
How do I install PunkBuster?
Even Balance, Inc. are the developers of the anti-cheat software, PunkBuster. Working with game developers, they have created a tool to help identify cheaters in-game and remove them. Any server that runs PunkBuster enforces PunkBuster bans because no one wants to play with a cheater.
1. Get the latest version of PunkBuster Updater HERE [websec.evenbalance.com](Mac OSX gamers click HERE [websec.evenbalance.com] ) .
2. Double click pbsetup.zip.
3. Extract pbsetup.exe to somewhere on your computer.
4. Double click pbsetup.exe (For Vista/Win7/Win8 users, right-click the file and select to run as Admin).
5. Click on Add Game.
6. Click on the Game drop down menu and select your title, in this case, Battlefield 3.
7. The box Game Path should automatically complete itself, but if it doesn’t click Browse and navigate to where you installed the game and then click on Add Game.
8. You will now see your game in the main window, click Check for Updates.
9. A window should pop up with a progress bar and update to the newest version of PunkBuster for the game, after it has finished a notification will appear, click Ok and you are done.
How do I update PunkBuster?
While PunkBuster is designed to update itself, there can be an error and manually updating via PBSetup is recommended.
Occasionally, you may receive various errors regarding PunkBuster Services not running. Some other software programs such as virus scanners, firewalls and Internet security software packages are suspicious of any new services and kernel drivers when they are first released. Some of these will block PunkBuster components thereby causing the 'Losing Key Packets' kicking. Until these various packages are updated to correctly identify PnkBstrA.exe, PnkBstrB.exe, and PnkBstrK.sys as components of the PunkBuster Anti-Cheat System, players who experience PunkBuster kicks due to these conflicts need to either manually adjust the settings of the other software running on their system or disable the other software while playing on PunkBuster enabled servers.
Make sure PnkBstr.exe is on your exceptions list of your firewall/anti-virus software to ensure it can communicate properly with the PunkBuster servers. You can check your anti-virus/firewall software manual for instructions on adding exceptions.
Make sure all PunkBuster Services are installed and running by downloading PBSVC.EXE [evenbalance.com] from Even Balance.
Save the file to your Desktop for easy access.
Double click the file and select “Run”.
Choose “Install/Re-Install PunkBuster Service”.
This will ensure PnkBstrA.exe and PnkBstrB.exe are installed and running properly.
If you still get kicks, such as “Can’t Initialize PnkBstrB.exe”, go to the Start Menu. In the “Run/Search” bar, type “services.msc” and press Enter.
Scroll through the list and find PnkBstrA and PnkBstrB. If they are not running (Check the Status column), right click each and select “Start”.
How do I uninstall PunkBuster?
You can remove PunkBuster for PC by going to the Control Panel – Programs & Features (Add/Remove Programs for Classic View) within Windows. If you’re having trouble auto-updating or running PBSetup.exe, it may help by removing PunkBuster from your system for a clean installation.
Click Uninstall/Change to remove PunkBuster Services from your computer. Note: You will not be able to join any matches of games that user Punkbuster until you re-install it. As with any uninstallation procedures, make sure to restart your PC to finalize any system changes.
You can also uninstall PunkBuster Services by running PBSVC.EXE and choose the “Uninstall PunkBuster Services” option.

  • It could be that your account didn't authenticate due to not logging in. It happens alot if you try to joing a game or match from steam by joinning a friends game and not starting the game first.
    Did you try to start the game by an invite from a steam friend or by joining a steam friend game?

    No. I was playing on the CMH server when I got kicked.
    That's a good point though, it IS Tuesday. I was just curious about the nature of previous ban/kick, since I have never been banned and I don't hack.
    I should mention that I have gotten kicked for 'failure to authenticate' due to steam being down, but this is a different error message all together.
  • The exact kick message could be useful, you didn't go to jail for ROE violation by any chance?
    (i don't know if PB handles these type of kicks tho)
    Anyway, the kick is most likely not cheat related, but its hard to tell sins its a follow up kick.
  • You may have been kicked for any number of reasons the message you got prior ban/kick (2 minutes) shows only how many minutes you have left before you can rejoin that server i am sure if you try to join again all will be fine.

    To my knowledge, I have never been banned from a server. Is there a specific reason I'm getting this kick from punkbuster?

    It could be some server running a nonsensical restriction like 'too many past usernames.'
  • Don't worry about it to much, you didn't do anything wrong. We have it a lot lately with the linux servers, people lose connection on map switch and join back in to fast for the server to realize you were gone causing it to kick for duplicated GUID. Although not saying this is the case with you, it can be anything and since its on the official server they use the standard KickLen of 2 minutes in the pbsv.
    - Ignoring MD5Tool Queries
    - Losing Key Packets
    - Service Communication Failure
    - PB INIT FAILURE
    - Disallowed Program/Driver
    These are the most common one's that I see daily, just make sure you have updated your PunkBuster (Only after a fresh install of AAPG will it run the older client and not auto update itself) and make sure both PnkBstrA.exe and PnkBstrB.exe are allowed in your firewall / anti-virus program.

    Sorry, I tried to be as exact as possible but I accidentally restarted my computer and no longer have s screenshot.
    It is not ROE kick.
    I am only concerned because it says 'prior ban/kick' and to my knowledge I have never been banned.

    This means you got kicked for something, and when the server (official does) have their KickLen on 2 minutes it instantly kicks you with that message. It doesn't mean you are banned, or violated anything.

    md5Tool kicks are mostly violations, so I doubt he gets kicked because of that. It's most likely he runs an outdated (fresh game install) PB version or has network time outs.

    Unless you are referring to 'Ignoring MD5Tool Queries', that is not cheat related and can be fixed if the server owner increases the value for md5toolfreq because that's the cause most of the time for those kicks. But I can assure you that any md5tool kicks related to known cheats on a streamed server will result in a permanent ban.

    The PunkBuster on the server (if setup correctly with configs) sends requests to check every player with md5tool checks, if the frequency is set to low the players side starts ignoring some of the requests and when that happens PunkBuster will kick those players under 'Ignoring MD5Tool Queries'.
    Then some servers, like I use to do also check non-cheat related md5's. The one I checked as well was AAGame.exe, which is not cheat related but we did that to check the hash and see if people manipulated it. If done incorrectly PunkBuster will kick players for having the wrong AAGame.exe. That's why I'm telling you that only cheat related md5's will result in a permanent ban on streamed servers, if you don't stream your server they can come back to that same server unless the server admin manually bans that player.
    Unless I understand you questions incorrect since I'm pretty much playing cryptogram with your words, this is how the system works.. You can test it all out on a local server, but don't use known cheats for testing because that can still result in a global ban.
